Zeiss Ikonta 521 medium format
You wouldn’t have this camera in your bag for fast street or commercial work, but for an instrument with strong character, artistry, analogue enjoyment and vintage charm, worthy of careful consideration.
The Ikonta 521 is a vintage folder from the Zeiss Ikon Company and is a fine example of German craftsmanship from the 1940s, 1950s era.
The camera we are reviewing uses 120 film producing 15 6x4.5frames per roll. Shooting the camera in landscape position results in portrait frames – shooting in portrait results in 12 landscape frames. This camera is fitted with the Novar 75mm F3.5 lens in a prontor shutter. This offers speeds from B to 1/300. Being only 12cm long it can fit easily into pocket or bag. Frame your image through the simple pop up viewfinder. There is no light meter, rangefinder or auto focus – it is all manual requiring the photographer to make all the decisions affecting the shoot – focus, aperture and shutter speed. Everything slows down and each frame has importance. The unique image quality is distinctly vintage with black & white being my film of choice for this camera.
Vintage film enthusiasts who appreciate the mechanical quality of the Zeiaa Ikonta 521 will be delighted to have this little beauty in their camera bag.
